Music has a way of shaping and changing our lives. We like to think of it as the soundtrack of our life; narrating our emotions, feelings, and experiences when we can’t always put these into words ourselves. I’m sure many of us have a go to song when feeling sad that makes you feel better or just allows you to process what is going on in your head.

Music also has a way of bringing up memories and nostalgia. I remember every home sports game at West Virginia University singing John Denver’s Country Roads after each win, arms around friends swaying back and forth as we shouted the lyrics.

With 2021 coming to an end in the next few weeks, it only means that Spotify’s yearly campaign of Spotify Wrapped is coming around again! This year’s campaign launched on December 1st. You may wonder why they chose the name ‘Wrapped,’ but I like to think that it represents Spotify giving its users a gift of nostalgia. Our music tastes often change throughout the year, so how are we to remember what we listened to on repeat back in January!

What is Spotify Wrapped?

So what is Spotify Wrapped? The marketing campaign launched by the leading music streaming platform Spotify in 2017 succeeded it’s ‘Year in Music’ campaign. It was created in a way to encourage users to share their music history and data with friends and family on social media.

When the campaign is launched each year, users have the ability to share various statistics to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat. These stats can include the top artists they listened to that year, top songs, top music genres, and more.

These stats are also displayed just like they are below, and even tell you how long you spent listening to music on their platform. Not only is the campaign fun for Spotify users to compare their music interests, but it is also a way for viewers to discover their next favorite artist or song.

My Spotify Wrapped 2021

Many Spotify users look forward to December to see this campaign as it’s exciting to see what their musical tastes have been over the last year. It is also a great campaign for Spotify as it is highly shareable, which coincides with their overall strategy which fosters this experience.

Within the platform, users can share songs, playlists, and podcasts with one another. These can also be shared directly to social media. Wrapped does the same thing, only it makes the experience more personalized for each user, which no other music streaming platform has done.

Spotify Wrapped Impacts Artists

Have there been times where you’ve discovered a new artist or band or song because of Spotify Wrapped? The campaign also benefits artists by potentially introducing them to new fans, ultimately building their fan base and supporters. This year, artists also received a Spotify Wrapped detailing their total streams, listeners, and countries their music was played in.

So, as your friends share their Spotify Wrapped 2021 data soon, keep an eye out for new music to be introduced to you. Who knows, you may just find your next favorite song to blast with the windows down or lift you up when bawling your eyes out!
